Scrap Dance Two-Step June

We are getting close to the end, today you’ll see the second block in the design. So grab the units you still have and let’s get started!

Scrap Dance Two-Step Mystery Quilt Along

With the bar units you have left, match one bar element with two scrappy/background HST elements to make this unit. Be very sure that the background HSTs point to the ends and up with the background bar on bottom.

One hint, at this point, you are down to the last bits to assemble.  I laid mine out in overlapping rows to be sure I had the remaining scrappy prints distributed.   Right away I had the same print in two adjoining pieces.

So, I could change them around until the scrappy prints were well distributed between the units.

As you sew, be careful to sew through the little ‘x’ to get those sharp corner points.

Now, let’s Two-Step! Here is the block you’ll make with these units. Note that half the HST/bar units go on the top, and the other half will be turned around and on the bottom. The final block will have all four corner background HSTs pointing to the outside corners as shown here.

Here’s mine.  Note again I laid out the units in rows, and did all of them at once to be sure that the prints were distributed as best as they could be.  There is the opportunity to change them around before sewing if one block ends up with the same print contiguous.  Sew in rows, pressing seams in one direction, either all up or down.

Here is your pdf for your sewing room for June – Scrap Dance Two Step June.  Resist the temptation to finish it up at this point, as we have one more thing to do.  Remember that extra fabric I said to put aside at the beginning?  You’ll need it next month (and it is NOT sashing, so don’t do that), so be sure you have some extra background and a few more scraps for July.  You’ll find out the final mystery step next month!

We’d all love to see your progress as you go forward, please upload your pictures to the Flickr group, and be sure they are public so we can share them.  The group url is https://www.flickr.com/groups/scrapdancemystery2015/ – and I look forward to seeing all your units as they are done.  Any finish of any of the mystery quilt alongs can be shared on this group, even from the original mystery from 2015.  We use the same group for all the annual Scrap Dance mysteries.

Here area a few of the latest shares of the May block finishes. Garden2Fun has wonderful bright batiks!

Scrap Dance Mystery Two Step – May

The May Two Step will be fast and easy, as we build Block A today!  Aren’t you excited?!

Scrap Dance Two-Step Mystery Quilt Along

OK, so get out the remainder of your QSTs, and all the two-tone scrappy HSTs.  You’ll make the unit below.  Be sure that the background of the QST touches the HSTs.  Also be very careful that all the units are the same, with the diagonal line on the HSTs oriented this way.  It is important to the secondary design that those lines go a certain way.

It is helpful to lay them out first to be sure that the prints are well distributed and you don’t end up with the same one side by side.

Press all the units made today to the outside from the center.  This will nest the seams with the previous unit pressed to the center as shown.

Now, let’s two-step and build the block.  Get out your previous QST units.  Take half of the above units placing them oriented this way above the first unit, and the other half rotated 180 degrees placed below.  See photo.  Your diagonal lines on the corners should look like this., and you’ll end up with a square in a square in the center.  Press the final seams all in one direction, either all up or all down, it doesn’t matter which.

Don’t be tempted to guess what is next, LOL, what is left can go together at least four different ways, and only one of those is right.  We’d all love to see your progress as you go forward, so upload your pictures to the Flickr group, and be sure they are public so we can share them.  The group url is https://www.flickr.com/groups/scrapdancemystery2015/ – and I look forward to seeing all your units as they are done.

Here is a pdf for your sewing room (update! it is now a pdf) – Two Step May Instructions

Are you just now finding the mystery?  You can catch up quickly as there are only five months published.  We will finish in July, then have more shares in August as the quilts are finished.  So, come join in!  Just click on Scrap Dance Mystery Two-Step to get started.  Each step is linked to the one that came after, and all have downloads to print out for reference in the sewing room.

Scrap Dance Mystery Two-Step April

Are you ready for the next step in the Scrap Dance Mystery Two-Step?  I know I am!!  Sometimes it seems like it is so long between steps!  But from the comments, I think that is a good thing so you can work it in around other things and still have some mystery fun while making a dent in the scrap bins.
Scrap Dance Two-Step Mystery Quilt Along

OK, then!  Without further ado, here is the April Two-Step!

First, divide the total number of 4-1/2 inch scrappy squares into two equal number piles.  If you are making the Queen size, you’ll have an uneven number of squares, put the extra one on the first pile.

Match up those squares with the bar units as shown in the picture below.  Make sure your background on this unit is touching the center square.  The scrappy bars should be on the outside.  You’ll use half your bar units for this step, (just over half for Queen).  Press toward the center square.

Now, Two Step!  With the remaining 4-1/2-inch squares, use two QST units to make the unit below.  Be sure that your scrappy QST touches the center square.  The background QSTs should be oriented north-south.   This will use up half of your QSTs.  Press toward the center square.

Scrap Dance Mystery Two Step Shares

It is wonderful to see all the different concepts in colors with this mystery quilt.  There are just so many great combinations, they make me want to make multiples of this quilt.  Or design another one just so I can do one or more of them, LOL!!

Like Marsha’s brights with black.

Part 3 Units

Or Carolyn’s colorful scraps with a butter yellow background.

2-Step Quarter Squares

Lindi’s understated elegance has really caught my eye.  She also has posted her HSTs as well, and they look so beautifully subtle. That pic got marked private, but you can see it if you to to the group.

.

Mary’s wild prints are so modern…

and they are going to really pop with her white background!

Step 3 of the Two Step

Edy’s striking color combination of orange and teal is going to be interesting with that touch of black.

Two step Step 3

Elaine showed off her new-to-her Featherweight, Gladys, and her units completed.  I love her lamp!

My new 1955 Feather weight,Gladys, sewed the HST for Scrap Dance 2 Step in record breaking time. The trimming took the time!

Laura has her QSTs done, and …

Two Step Step 2

step three as well!  Laura commented “I sure hope all of these crazy unplanned bright scraps work!”  I think they will.

Two Step Step 3

Karen caught up too, with a very French feel to her fabric choices.

Ranch Wife is doing hers in Western prints, how fun is that!

I’d love to see more of your progress on the next steps, so upload those pics and share. If you haven’t stopped by your photos lately, there are lots of comments on all of them from the other participants. It is fun to have such a supportive community in our quilting world.

Are you caught up? If not, don’t despair, there is still plenty of time. I only post a new step once a month, on the third Friday, so even those just now finding this quilt along can catch up in just a few days. Scrap Dance Two Step March

How’s your mystery going so far, are you caught up and ready for the next step?  I really get a big kick out of seeing all the different color combinations, and choices for backgrounds.  There are some new posts in the Flickr group with really interesting quarter-square triangle units, such diversity!  I can hardly wait to tell you the rest of the steps so I can see the finishes of these wonderful quilts.  But, I’ll just have to have patience, not my strong suit, LOL!

Scrap Dance Two-Step Mystery Quilt Along

Match the 5″ background squares with an equal number of 5-inch scrap squares for your chosen size.  Draw lines on the back of the lighter square on the diagonal.

I have found it easier to actually draw the sewing line 1/4-inch away from the center line (that I do not draw), so I draw 2 lines on each square.

If you are using another method, make as many of these units as you have 5-inch background squares in your chosen size cutting instructions.  Chain stitch the units.

Cut apart and press to the darker side.

Now let’s Two-Step!  Take the remaining 5″ color scraps, make two color HSTs.  Pair up the squares with as much contrast as you can with color or value.

Cut apart and press to the darker side.  Square all HST units to 4-1/2 inches.

And that’s the Two-Step for March.  PDF – Two Step March  Don’t forget to share your progress in the Scrap Dance Flickr group.  If you missed any steps, or you are just now finding this post, click on the category of 2017 Scrap Dance Mystery Two Step on the sidebar to see all the posts for the mystery.

Click on April Two Step for the next step, published April 21!

It is such a thrill for me to see all these different interpretations of my ideas.  I cannot tell you how much fun I have with all your shares.  Please continue to upload your progress photos, and if you haven’t done so yet, it is easy and free!  Just create a Flickr account, upload your photos and add them to the group.  Be sure they are set to public, not private, so they can be shared here on the blog.  It is the same group I have been using for all the mystery quilts, so you can look back to previous year’s photos too.  The group url is https://www.flickr.com/groups/scrapdancemystery2015/ – and I look forward to seeing all your progress.  Plus, you can still upload finish pictures of previous mystery quilt-alongs to the same group.  Jeannine just shared her original Scrap Dance Mystery finish, love her colors and borders!  Great job, and the quilting looks perfect too.

There are also discussion groups connected with each Flickr group where you can ask questions, and most of the participants will comment on the photos.  It is a really fun way to connect with others doing the mystery.

Scrap Dance Two Step February

Here we are with the second post for Scrap Dance Two-Step!   I hope you are having fun!  If you are just finding this quilt-along, you can catch up with January’s cutting and first sewing steps. The best part of a scrappy quilt along is you have nothing to lose!  Get a new quilt by just using up leftovers, and bits in the scrap bins!  Now that you have seen January, you know that each month will have two steps to complete.  Last month was cutting and sewing the first unit.  This month we do a two-step unit.

Scrap Dance Two-Step Mystery Quilt Along

Step One – For your chosen size, match all the 5-3/4-inch background squares with an equal number of the 5-3/4-inch scrap squares.  Draw lines on the background squares, either one in the center (and sew 1/4-inch away on both sides), or this way – two sewing lines 1/4-inch away from the center.  I have found it easier to stay accurate with this method.

two-step-hsts-marking-2

Sew on the lines (or on either side of a center line).  Cut apart down the center between the sewing lines to form half square triangles (HSTs), do not square!  Press toward the scrappy side.

two-step-qsts-1a

Now, let’s Two-Step!   Using the HST units you just made, draw sewing lines perpendicular to the seam line on half of the units.

two-step-qsts-8

Pair them together again with the other half unmarked HSTs, with the scrappy sides matched to background and nesting the seams. Try to mix up medium and dark values on the scraps.

two-step-qsts-9

Sew on the lines (or on either side of a center line).

two-step-qsts-10

Cut apart down the center between the sewing lines to form quarter-square triangle (QST) units.

two-step-qsts-11

Press seam toward one side, which one doesn’t matter.  Then, square to 4-1/2 inches.

two-step-qsts-12

February unit – quarter square triangles.
