Our second week will see the construction of the block and beginning the quilting. So, here is where we left off. If you missed last weeks beginning with the cutting instructions and the first unit construction, click HERE.
Start by sewing the HSTs units together. Press the seams open on these units to reduce bulk.
Then sew in rows across the block.
Make three blocks.
Sew the three blocks into the runner.
Add a border. I used the same gold as the fabric in the center of the nine-patch. My border is cut 2-1/2-inches wide.
Assemble your runner, and quilt as you like. The blocks finish at 12 inches, so the runner is about 12 x 36 without borders. The Patriotic quilt version with 20 blocks is about 58 x 72 with 2-inch sashing and without borders. This week, we were really snowed in!! We got somewhere between 8 and 10 inches of snow.
But the sun came out very late in the afternoon, so we might be able to get out by Monday.

Beautiful block, and a great project. I haven’t seen my sewing room in days, but I have hopes for Thursday (note the very sad face, because at that point it is nearly 2 months since I worked on anything besides HEXI’s on my trip!) But, hey, the tree is finally up, and I am going to be ready for guests on Tuesday. We only got about 6″ of snow, and it is very pretty! Thanks for the PDF….dreaming of sewing.

Loving your nine-patch star! Still finishing Christmas gift quilting, but then hope to make a few of these to get a jump on next year’s gifts. It would look great in so many fabrics! I was going to attempt the Moda countdown project but I want those fabrics first 🙂. The blocks are adorable. Doing a little baking, a little binding and a little embroidery today. Enjoying your snowscape, too. You have WAY more down than we do, and we’re in Montana!
This is so funny. I started to make the patchwork star block, but didn’t make note of which blog it was on. Once I had the block done, I wanted to check back to see if there was a border. I figured I saw it on one of two blogs, went back a few days on each blog, and couldn’t find it. I totally forgot it was a QAL and I stopped looking probably one post too soon. Anyway, I am sewing the binding down and had a good chuckle when I saw today’s post. I finished mine with triangles in the upper corners of the back so I can hang it or use it as a topper on a small square table in my entry.
Enjoy your snow while you have it, although by Monday you’ll probably have cabin fever and want to get out.
Hello Carole; I look forward to finishing my Table Runner as soon as I can. Making a bigger quilt would be a great project with this pattern for the Stars. They are fun to make and use up a lot of scraps! Your block for the Moda Bake Shop Countdown to Christmas Quilt Along is fabulous! You did a fantastic job in creating this pattern after a piece of rolled hard candy! I look forward to creating it, plus as I was looking at it, I thought it would make such a great quilt border for a Christmas border! I love your new block! oh my, you got all the snow we’re supposed to be getting! high 50’s today, not a cloud or a flake or a raindrop in sight! Ski resorts in a world of hurt, even though the season started out a bit early and promising, it’s fast deteriorating.
Thanks for the ideas, I have 3 in progress now, but not a stitch this past weekend, was making fruitcake, fudge, and nut clusters, along with a bean salad (Cowboy Caviar!) for tomorrow’s Holiday Party here at work. I need to retire… unmotivated today, would much rather be stitching and decorating and putting together fudge and fruitcake gifts!
