The Autumn Jubilee Quilt Along starts today with a new pattern, Stars on Autumn Lane! I have designed this with two options, both using exactly the same number of squares and half square triangles. Pull your autumn colors, and quilt along! The steps will come out once a week on Fridays, and be done in four weeks, with a final Friday post in November to wrap up the quilting and finishing. The table topper is 36-inches square before borders, and will have only nine blocks, easily doable for your Thanksgiving table. Since this is a quilt-along and not a mystery, here are the two options.
The table topper is the tesselating option on the right. On the left, is the smaller lane option in a lap quilt size. You can do either option in any size.
Table topper 3×3 – 36-inches square before borders
Lap Quilt 3×4 – 36 x 48 inches before borders
Twin – 5×7 – 60 x 84 inches before borders
Step One – Cut squares and make HSTs (half-square triangles) from the table below for the size you select. Both options use exactly the same units. For the table topper, I used the Autumn Lane fabrics and all scrappy Autumn Lane background fabrics, chosen from the fat quarter bundle. For the lap quilt, I purchased additional yardage of one of the ecru fabrics along with 2 yards of the leaf print for borders and binding for both quilts.
Cut these squares. Bkgd = light neutral background fabrics, Scraps = medium to dark colors
Size 3-1/2-in Bkgd 3-1/2 in scraps 4-in Bkgd 4-in scraps

Lap 24 48 60 60
Twin 72 140 174 174
Background yardage needed if using all one fabric
Table Topper – 3/4 yard
Lap size, about 1-1/4 yard
Twin – 2-1/2 yards
Pair up the 4-inch background squares with the 4-inch scrappy squares and make HSTs. If you need a refresher on how to mark and chain piece HSTs, click on Chain Piecing HSTs.
Be sure to square to 3-1/2 inches. How To Square UP HSTs.

I’m giggling because I LOVE making HST’s. I use a tool called “June Tailor Perfect Half Square / Quarter Square Triangle Ruler”. I have had this ruler since 2008 and LOVE it. I’ve tried lots of other methods, but I ALWAYS go back to this one! Watch this video and see what you think. Another great pattern, and I LOVE half-square triangles; especially scrappy ones! I am going to escape to the sewing room early today and dig in my bin of Autumn Jubilee fabrics and make some of these! Oh dear, what size…..twin of course…..THANK YOU for not giving the #’s for a king size!!!!!! This would be a fun one to complete and donate to Hurricane victims. My guild in Dover DE (Helping Hands Quilt Guild) issued a challenge to the members to make some quilts for donation this month.

I am quilting for autumn…this weekend I’m planning on quilting my scrap dance tango quilt that I pieced in fall colors. It has been waiting for quilting for far too long. The Stars on Autumn Lane quilt is beautiful – it looks like I may be starting another fall quilt lol.

Finally finished Two-Step, will post this weekend! I think the Autumn pattern will be perfect for a new table topper for my 42″ round table – will add a border or two for size. My dining chairs are persimmon leather, so will choose colors that work with them,M although maybe not strictly ‘autumn’ in prints.

Both options are so nice I’ll have trouble deciding which one to make. I am quilting for autumn…just not as much as usual. I did a pumpkin table runner last week and promptly gave it away to a couple in our church celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary. Hubby came home from church and said she was wishing for a small autumn quilt and suggested I give the pumpkin quilt to her—so I did! I have enough older Thimbleberries autumn leftover for Stars on Autumn Lane. Thank you for sharing!
p.s. Pins and screws came out of foot yesterday….sore today but actually feels like a better range of motion in ankle. Leg break healing wonderfully….partly because of the TLC my quilting friends showed me. (Be sure and give yourself a pat on the back!) As a result I’ve been able to stand and quilt about 15 minutes at a time twice a day. I am SOOOOO grateful!
Right now I am preparing to move from Indiana to Texas in November. No time to quilt, but am anxious to get to my new home and set up my quilting studio.
I hope to quilt an autumn themed quilt – waiting for my knee to get better – had surgery a week ago today
Please excuse my last question. I figured it out easy peasy. We are cutting both sizes, but only using the 4″ one’s in the first step. Sorry, my brain has been on overload this week.

Isn’t it weird, I wear blues reds and pinks, decorate my home in blue and burgundy, but I LOVE autumn colors in a quilt! This is gorgeous, Carole. I’ve been looking at CT autumn fat quarter bundles and trying to justify just a wee bit more fabric in my stash! Going to try a day trip to the mountains this weekend, however our first snow is expected Sun night or Monday morning down here in the basin. Already been snowing up higher! sigh

As usual, I’m a bit late to the party, lol! Taking care of my elderly Dad so, hate to admit this, I haven’t seen much of my computer or sewing machine in a few months! This weekend though I started a quickie Halloween quilt for him so I guess that counts for something! Your quilt is gorgeous, am seriously going to have to order some fabric and make this. Oh,, Autumn… stitching for this time of year is fun.. finishing a primitive pumpkin wall hanging .. with some dark embroidery outlines.. for myself, having made pumpkin wall hangings for many others… one with a reverse side of Christmas trees. Now I am planning another using dark ‘broody’ colors .. with maybe a raven perched on the stem. Such enjoyment to have a small project.

Definitely going to be working on this one but trying to decide if I want to make the blocks a little bigger or just make more blocks. We’ll see but it’s a beauty!!

Hi from eastern Virginia. Thank you for sharing your wonderful mystery quilts. I am not much of a “mystery quilt” fan usually but I have enjoyed three of your quilts so far. I don’t know how to post my quilts to share, but one was very randomly scrappy, the next one had a controlled palette of batiks, and I am still working on this one. I think I am going to give this one to my grandson who is due to be born at any moment and hopefully he will enjoy it on his big boy bed in a few years. I like your quilts because the patterns are more traditional, there are multiple sizes available, , and they have a lot of movement in them. Not having three million tiny half square triangles in them is an added bonus! ;0) I guess not having to spend a year making one quilt is an advantage to an empty-nester. Anyway, some day I will be motivated to learn to post my pictures but until then, thank you again. Keep on quilting!! Linda
