Scrap Dance Waltz Quilt Along – Block A

Update – This post series will be taken down on March 1, 2017.  The pattern is now published in my Craftsy store for the low introductory price of just $5.  Purchases fund the costs of the blog so I can continue to develop fun quilt alongs without resorting to ads.  The price will go up to its regular price of $8 on March 1.

Today will be Block A.  This is the star block that uses just a few HSTs and lots of squares.  If you are still making HSTs, this should give you some time to catch up. Lay out your squares and HSTs in the design shown.

Sew in rows.  Press the seam allowances in opposite directions – such as even rows left and odd rows right, or however you like – so the rows will nest nicely.

Press the row seams all in one direction, either up or down, doesn’t matter. This will allow nesting of the seams with Block B.

Make 18 for the quilt-along size quilt.

And, for those who have asked about the two color Christmas option, I have done the math for you.  Update – Thanks to Cheryl for catching that I colored the sample backwards to the instructions.  Here is how it should be.

Here are the cutting needs for that option.
Background 2-1/2 squares –   212
Background 3-inch squares –  174

Block A – reds
2-1/2 inch squares – 162
3-inch squares -72

Block B – greens
2-1/2 inch squares – 153
3-inch squares – 102

Don’t forget, upload pictures of your progress to our Flickr Group – Scrap Dance Waltz – I’ll do an update next week, then the next step Block B in a fortnight.

If you are just now finding this post, see this link for all the cutting instructions – Scrap Dance Waltz Let’s Begin!

Are you quilting along?  Are you scrappy or two color, or three color?

  1. Carole, the option you created is sooooo pretty!!! Wishing everyone one fun with this one. 🙂

  2. Very pretty!

  3. Good Morning Carole! My the three of us are all up early! I have caught a very nasty Flu Bug that is going full force around our community. I felt just fine and dandy and then bang, I was all stuffed up and coughing feeling awful within hours. So, I did not get as far as I had hoped on my half square triangles yesterday. Hopefully, I will get some more done today and also be able to make up this pretty block! It seems that your Mysteries, have really gotten me hooked on half square triangles, Carole! I enjoy making them and using them in quilts like never before. I also like the way that Jenny from Missouri Star Quilts does her half square triangles also. Which brings up Stars, I was not real big into stars either until the two of you presented your wonderful methods for HST and now I am really into Star Blocks also. LOL. Since it is only 5:34 am here and not a great time to be sewing (although, I really think hubby could sleep through it) I will continue to check out some emails, download some pictures to my blog and post a post. Thank You so much for doing all of the extra math needed for the Christmas Layout of this Quilt. I have my eyes on a couple of other fabrics that just may work! You are always such a great host and going that extra distance for us! I really appreciate it! Have a fantastic creative day!

  4. I’m all backwards. I’m working this quilt as the picture shows and Block B in the picture is green but your instructions are for Block B to be red. So I am actually working on Block A as the red block. Loving the pattern anyway. Thanks again.

  5. This is such an attractive quilt! I love it, and hope to start on it sometime soon! Thanks for sharing your talents with us!

  6. thank you!

  7. So pretty! Love how it looks!

  8. I like this block. I wish I were making this quilt now but I have too many other things in the pipeline.

  9. This is beautiful Carole. One day I am going to have to go back and start from the beginning of this project.
I love your result so far.
Did you get a new job? That is great if you did. I hope you like it.
    Have fun preparing for Christmas.
I am trying — being brave is exhausting.
Mom’s memorial service is tomorrow (finally. That is too complicated to explain but … my brother was “busy” this month)
So, we have a lot of lovely preparations. I love my daughters.
My dad will be happy and I think we will finally give mom a beautiful tribute.

Yes, I still miss my Pierro

  10. With slightly different color placement, that’s actually a favorite block of mine! Thanks for the next step. I’m behind, as always.

  11. Hi, I just saw this. How do you see the pattern for the whole quilt?
