Christmas Wool Applique Penny Rug

Doing handwork in the fall is one of my favorite things to do.  I like to have something to stitch while I am watching football games, and wool appliqué is one of the easiest to do.  Today I am going to show you a wool appliqué penny rug for use with a candle or a mat for a favorite Christmas item to display on a table.  I’ll give you the pattern today too, so you can download it for free.

Gather your wool felt and some embellishing beads along with floss to match colors.  I pulled a bunch of things from my stash, not sure what I wanted to use until I got the base done.

The base is ecru with green trees and red ornaments.  Start by cutting out your base and elements, pinning into place. Alternate the trees with the ornaments. The little brown squares are the same size and serve as both the tree base and the ornament top. Center each one in the scallop, about 1/2-inch from the edge.

I start by appliquéing the brown squares so I didn’t have to change thread color, removing the tree or ornament as I went and repinning as I did each square.

Appliqué the trees and ornaments.

Now, dig out all your seed beads in your stash, or get some at the local craft store.  We are going to use them to put lights and ornaments on the trees, and embellish the ornaments. I put bugle beads in gold at the base of the tree.

Clear and gold seed beads are added to the tree.

Then I added additional seed beads in green and red, placing them randomly.

For the ornaments, I began with three gold seed beads in the center.

Then I added five gold bugle beads in a star pattern.

Do all the beading for all the trees and ornaments.

Next, using green floss, stitch a wavy line around the center, dipping down near the ornaments and going around the trees. I used three back stitches, then a lazy daisy stitch alternating sides to suggest holly.

Add red seed beads to look like holly berries, placing them at random intervals and alternating sides of the stitching.

Stitching and embellishing done.

When the stitching is complete, I use scraps of iron-on fusible interfacing on the back. This adds more body and stability to the piece, and it locks down the threads for security. Plus it is a great way to use those tiny pieces left over from other projects.

Place the top piece on the backing wool and mark a line 1/2-inch from the edge in chalk.

Cut out the backing and appliqué the top to it. I use a shallow whip stitch, catching only the top part of the burgundy so no stitches show on the back. Here I tried it out to make sure I was happy with the 1/2-inch measurement. Yep, I like it.

All stitched, it does well with a small candle too.

I visit the primitive gathering shop blog regularly. My wildest dream is to find a Juki and every color of Valdani pearl cotton in my stocking. And I would enjoy using the Christmas wool bundle. Such beautiful reds.

Such a beautiful site, thanks for the lead. I want to make some seasonal door hangings, and there’s an Always Welcome wool kit that would be for most of the year! Love your penny rug, that would make an adorable tree skirt for a table top tree.

Thank you for that tutorial – very easy to follow– really liked the new wool n needle iv fabric and already know what I want to use it for !!!

  14. From their extensive range, at Primitive Gatherings, Green Japanese prints would be a wonderful fabric to have, love that wave like moire taffeta in GRN #45, something that was so popular way back in the1960’s. And your tutorial, I don’t have felt here, but fabric that will fit in so well. Thanks for the tutorial, a wonderful mid’winter project for down here in New Zealand.

  15. Good Morning Carole! Oh my goodness! I could spend hours upon hours dreaming in this shop; I do not know how I ever missed them before being such an avid follower of your blog and checking out all of your links. Yet, I will not miss it again…I signed up for the newsletter and the blog following and am going to make sure and figure out how to get the link on my blog also. They have some of the most awesome items to create and sew with fabrics or kits and well so much more. Of course, you know all of this that is why you are letting us in on this great site!

One of the kits I would love to find in my stocking would be the Dresden Quilt Kit. It just really caught my attention. But I would love to also have my stocking over flowing with each and every one of the hand embroidery kits like the snowmen or the tea towels. Then I fell in love with their flannel fabric choices. I know I will be asking Santa to make a stop at their shop!

Thank You for sharing this fun and delightful project! I will be creating a few of these for gifts this year. Actually in the next few days, I am pretty sick with a flu and need a lot of bed rest so great projects like this are fabulous! Already printed and will be choosing fabrics soon. Have a fantastic creative day!

  16. Peaceful and Hummingbirds would be my choice for my Christmas stocking. All of their items are beautiful. It is so hard to choose. Thanks for the giveaway and the picture tutorial.

  17. This is something I think I could accomplish with my rather basic sewing skills. I’ve always liked the vintage penny rugs I see and it would be fun to do something for Christmas along those lines.

You have really gone all out for these 12 days! I’ve loved all your posts. I do subscribe to your posts by e-mail.

  19. dezertsuz

Thank you for the wool pattern. That’s a great design and I look forward to making it this fall. I am pretty sure I have enough white, but I’ll have to look for the dark red. As long as I’m wishing, I’d LOVE to have the Valdani 48 thread perle cotton pack! Thanks to Primitive Gatherings for the wool packet to give away.

  20. Carole I really think your table topper is so cute. I don’t have any of the things to make it but I did download the PDF to do at another time.
I love the watering can table runner
